How important is hardwood furniture care? Caring for furniture is necessary if you want them to remain in a great condition. Old polish and dust deposits over time can combine to leave dark blemishes on hardwood furnitures i.e. dining tables, bookcases and coffee tables. It is recommended to regularly ‘deep clean‘ the item of furniture to ensure the furniture stays in top shape – without blemishes.

It is important to ask for any specific cleaning requirements when purchasing hardwood products. Some products cleaning procedures may vary depending on the type of finish, or age of the product.

A simple overview on Hardwood Furniture Care

Step 1: Remove surface dirt by dusting. Build ups of dust on the surface of wooden furniture can scratch the surface, and damage the item. Dry, clean cloths or feather dusters effectively remove the dust from the surface.

** Frequently dusting the wooden furniture will prevent a build up of dust and dirt in the future **

Step 2:  To remove sticky spots take a very weak mixture of dish soap and water. Dip a soft cloth into the solution and wring it out until it is almost dry. Use this cloth to wipe the furniture until clean. Rinse immediately with another almost dry cloth dipped in only water.

Step 3: Take another cloth, this time DRY and use it to wipe up any excess water on the piece.

Step 4: Wax the furniture once thoroughly cleaned. If applying wax to a non clean surface, it will trap any dirt and grime underneath it, which can make it difficult to get the furniture clean in the future. Wax provides the furniture with a protective layer preventing scratches or dents.

These are some basic steps to follow when cleaning your hardwood furniture. Remember to ask for cleaning advice when purchasing the furniture, to ensure you do not damage the piece.
